PROPANE OR BUTANE?

UNSURE WHICH IS BEST FOR YOU?

Propane and butane both used for many applications such as heating or cooking. Both have their benefits and disadvantages. Whilst Propane performs better when temperatures drop below freezing, Butane is a cleaner burner and provides more energy.

This is why many rural domestic homes use Propane to fulfil their heating needs. Butane needs to be above freezing to perform well, as below zero it will lose pressure because it remains a liquid and not a gas – even though it is a more efficient burner by around 13%. This means it is not as versatile when it comes to storing outside in all weathers.

Propane is often used to power automobiles and forklifts, when it is commonly referred to as LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas).

As a rule of thumb if you are using a burner for camping, Butane is the better option – if you are planning on using gas in sub-zero temperatures, or storing outside in winter, choose propane.
